Practice speaking Italian out loud

Italian is welcoming at the start — the spelling matches the sound and the first phrases come quickly. The wall arrives later, when conversation demands verb forms and agreement faster than you can assemble them.

The short answer

Speaking Italian well comes from saying it out loud until verb endings, double consonants and agreement become automatic. Practice a little every day with something that answers you and corrects you, and your sentences start arriving faster within weeks. Lumen Speak is an AI tutor built for exactly that kind of Italian speaking practice.

Why speaking it is the hard part

1

Verbs carry a lot of information

Person, tense and mood are all in the ending, so choosing wrongly changes who did what and when. In writing you can pause; speaking gives you no such luxury.

2

Double consonants change words

The length of a consonant is meaningful. Getting it wrong can produce a different word entirely, and it is one of the clearest markers of a non-native speaker. It has to be practiced aloud.

3

The subjunctive turns up in ordinary sentences

Il congiuntivo is not reserved for formal writing — it appears after very common expressions of opinion and doubt. Learners tend to avoid it, which flattens everything they say.

4

Agreement runs through the sentence

Gender and number pull articles, adjectives and some past participles along with them. Producing that chain correctly in real time is a different skill from recognising it.

What actually moves it

Real conversation at your level

Concrete, familiar topics but open questions, so you are expressing your own thoughts rather than repeating sentences.

Corrections kept short and specific

The exact phrase, the fix, and one line of why — saved so you can go through them afterwards.

Vocabulary that comes back

Words you reach for and do not have are saved and reappear later in different contexts.

Common questions

Can I practice Italian conversation by myself?
Yes. You speak to an AI tutor out loud and it responds and corrects in real time, whenever you have five minutes.
Will it help with the subjunctive?
It corrects it when you avoid or misuse it, and steers conversation toward the expressions that require it.
Do I need to prepare anything?
No. Open a session and start talking; the plan is already built around your level and goals.
How long does it take to learn to speak Italian?
The US Foreign Service Institute estimates about 24 weeks of full-time study (around 600 classroom hours) for an English speaker to reach professional working proficiency in Italian. Holding a simple everyday conversation comes much sooner: many learners get there within a few months of regular speaking practice.
Is Italian a good first language to learn?
Yes. The US Foreign Service Institute places it in its easiest group for English speakers, spelling is close to how words sound, and much of the vocabulary shares Latin roots with English.
