Terms of Service

Last updated: June 2026

The basics

By creating an account and using Lumen, you agree to these terms. "Lumen", "we", and "us" refers to the Lumen service. "You" refers to the person using it. If you don't agree, please don't use the service.

Free placement

Every new account can complete a free placement assessment to find your level and generate a personalised plan — no credit card required to start. Continued live voice practice requires an active paid subscription. The free placement is for new users only and cannot be transferred. We reserve the right to change what's included in the free placement for new sign-ups at any time.

Subscriptions and billing

Lumen has one all-access plan, offered with two billing options: a 6-month plan billed every six months, or a monthly plan billed every month. Both include the same features and the same unlimited practice, subject to the fair use section below. There are no minute allowances to run out of.

Subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each billing period, and continue until you cancel. The price and the renewal period are shown to you before you buy. Prices may change, and we'll tell you at least 30 days before a change affects you.

Where you bought your subscription determines who processes the payment. On iPhone and iPad it is Apple, through your App Store account. On Android it is Google Play. On the web it is Stripe. We never see or store your card details on any of them.

If a web payment fails, we'll retry and notify you by email; if it remains outstanding after a reasonable retry period your access may pause. Store subscriptions are handled by Apple or Google under their own rules.

Fair use

Your plan is unlimited for normal personal use, and we mean it — practise as much as you like, every day, for as long as you find useful. There is no hidden quota and we are not going to slow you down for being a keen learner.

What the plan is not intended for is use that isn't a person practising a language: sharing one account between several people, reselling or redistributing access, using automated tools, scripts or bots to hold sessions, leaving sessions running unattended, or using the service in a way that is plainly designed to consume as much capacity as possible rather than to learn.

If an account is used that way, we may contact you about it and, if it continues, apply reasonable limits to that account or suspend it. Except where the misuse is clear and deliberate, we'll always get in touch and give you a chance to put it right before we do anything. This section exists to protect the service for everyone else — it is not a licence to cut off a genuine learner for practising a lot.

Cancellation and refunds

You can cancel at any time, and where you cancel depends on where you bought. If you subscribed on iPhone or iPad, cancel in your Apple subscription settings; on Android, in Google Play; on the web, through the billing portal in the app. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription. When you cancel, your plan stays active until the end of the period you've already paid for — you won't be charged again after that.

Refunds for App Store and Google Play purchases are handled by Apple and Google under their own policies, not by us — we can't issue or refuse them. For web purchases, or if you believe you were charged in error, contact us at [email protected] and we'll look into it.

Acceptable use

Lumen is an educational service. You agree not to:

  • Use the service for anything illegal or harmful
  • Try to reverse-engineer, scrape, or abuse the API
  • Share your account with others or resell access
  • Use bots, scripts or automation to hold sessions, or leave sessions running unattended
  • Attempt to manipulate or deceive the AI tutor in ways that disrupt the service
  • Use the service to generate, store, or transmit content that is abusive, hateful, or sexually explicit

We may suspend accounts that violate these terms without notice.

The service itself

Lumen is an AI tutoring tool, not a certified language-education programme. It is designed to help you practise speaking, build vocabulary, and improve through conversation — but we make no guarantees about specific outcomes or exam results.

The service is provided "as is". We do our best to keep it available and accurate, but we cannot guarantee uptime or that the AI will always respond perfectly. We're not liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of Lumen.

Your content

You own what you say in your sessions. By using Lumen you grant us a limited licence to process your voice and transcripts for the purpose of delivering the service (generating tutor responses, tracking corrections, building your learning path). We don't claim ownership of your content and we don't use it to train AI models without your explicit consent.

Account termination

You can delete your account at any time from Settings, or by contacting us. We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these terms. If we end your account without cause, we'll refund any unused portion of the current billing period that we actually collected; where Apple or Google took the payment, we'll ask you to request the refund from them, as only they can issue it.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms from time to time. For material changes, we'll notify you by email at least 14 days before they take effect. Continued use of the service after changes take effect means you accept the new terms.
