Practice speaking French out loud

French rewards people who speak it badly for a while first. Learners who wait until their grammar is tidy tend to stay silent for years, because the things that make spoken French hard are precisely the things that reading cannot teach you.

The short answer

Spoken French improves when you practice saying it rather than reading it, because French sounds very different from how it is written, and choices like passé composé vs imparfait or tu vs vous have to happen in real time. Talk out loud daily and get corrected as you go. Lumen Speak is an AI tutor you can practice French conversation with.

Why speaking it is the hard part

1

What you see is not what you say

Silent endings, liaison between words, and vowels that do not exist in English mean the written form is a poor guide to the spoken one. You have to hear it and produce it, repeatedly, before it settles.

2

Passé composé or imparfait

Both translate into an English past tense, so English speakers guess. Narrating your own day out loud, and being corrected in the moment, is what turns the distinction from a rule you know into a choice you make.

3

Tu and vous is a social decision, not a grammar one

Getting it wrong is rarely catastrophic but it is immediately noticeable. Practicing both registers deliberately means you are not deciding for the first time in front of a real person.

4

Gender you cannot reason your way to

Noun gender mostly has to be learned per word, and it propagates through adjectives and participles. Producing it aloud is what fixes it; recognising it on a page is not.

What actually moves it

Speaking from session one

There is no silent period. You are talking within the first minute, at whatever level you are actually at.

Precise, short corrections

You get the exact phrase that was wrong rather than a paragraph of feedback, with the reason written in your own language so it is readable later.

It remembers you

Recent mistakes and saved vocabulary come back in later sessions in new contexts, which is what makes them stick.

Common questions

Can I practice French speaking without a tutor or partner?
Yes — that is exactly what Lumen Speak is for. It is a spoken conversation with an AI tutor, available whenever you are, with no booking.
Will it help my pronunciation?
You practice out loud every session and the tutor models the correct form for you to repeat when something is worth cementing. It will not mock or grade your accent.
What if I do not understand something?
Ask for it in your own language and you will get a full explanation there, then the session returns to French.
How long does it take to learn to speak French?
The US Foreign Service Institute estimates about 30 weeks of full-time study (around 750 classroom hours) for an English speaker to reach professional working proficiency in French. Holding a simple everyday conversation comes much sooner: many learners get there within a few months of regular speaking practice.
Is French pronunciation hard for English speakers?
It is the part most learners find hardest: silent letters, liaison between words and nasal vowels mean spelling is a poor guide to sound. It gets easier by speaking out loud and hearing yourself corrected, not by reading more.
